Surf Lessons at Kuta Reef, Bali
Kuta Reef is the natural next step after the beach. It is a left-hand reef break that sits offshore from the Kuta and Jimbaran area and is usually reached by a short boat ride. The wave peels along the reef with a defined shoulder, so you can practise paddling into green waves, angling and turning instead of riding whitewater straight to shore.
It generally works best from mid to high tide, when there is more water over the reef. Like most of Bali's west side, it is cleanest in the dry season (roughly April to October), when the trade winds blow offshore.
Because it breaks over reef, it is not a place for first-timers. You should be able to paddle out, pop up reliably and ride along a wave. It can get crowded with surfers from Kuta, and your coach will help you pick waves, position in the line-up and follow line-up etiquette.
Best for: intermediate surfers ready to leave the beach break behind.
